Elliot BESS

Project introduction

Elliot BESS is a proposed 300 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. Developed by RWE Clean Energy, this facility is designed to play a pivotal role in supporting the state’s—and the nation’s—growing energy demands. By storing clean electricity generated from sources like wind and solar when it’s plentiful, and delivering it during periods of high demand or when energy prices spike, Elliot BESS serves as a flexible and essential asset to the local and regional grid.

Already recognized as the third-largest provider of clean energy projects in the United States, RWE is bringing its considerable experience and expertise to Vanderburgh County. Elliot BESS is currently in the development phase, and once operational, it will provide a long-term source of reliable, American-made energy while offering economic opportunities and tax revenue to the local community.

Project Benefits

Economic Investment for Indiana

The Elliot BESS project is set to generate significant economic opportunities for the region, providing up to $82 million in property taxes throughout its operational life. This funding helps support crucial local infrastructure—from schools to roads—while also stimulating growth in sectors that benefit from reliable energy and broad-based electrification. Beyond the construction phase, Elliot BESS will create stable, long-term operational jobs, anchoring families and skilled workers in Vanderburgh and surrounding counties.

Reliable Power, When It’s Needed Most

Elliot BESS enhances grid reliability by balancing electricity supply and demand hour by hour. By storing excess clean energy, especially during times when wind and solar are generating more than the grid needs, the project ensures homes, businesses, and vital services always have access to dependable power—even during extreme weather or unexpected outages. This strengthens American energy independence and keeps Indiana’s electricity supply resilient and stable.

Clean Energy Supporting American Innovation

By enabling the use of more clean electricity sources, Elliot BESS drives innovation in domestic energy production. The project directly supports America’s all-of-the-above approach to meeting surging energy demand by adding firm capacity quickly and efficiently to the grid. With minimal maintenance, no moving parts, and a responsible end-of-life plan that returns the land for agriculture use, Elliot BESS is a blueprint for scalable, high-impact clean energy infrastructure developed in—and for—the United States.

Stronger Electric Grid

Strengthening Indiana’s Energy Infrastructure for the Future

Elliot BESS adds critical capacity to Indiana’s power grid, helping to stabilize electricity supplies and strengthen the state’s overall energy infrastructure. Through its advanced battery technology, Elliot BESS can discharge stored energy instantly, providing much-needed backup during emergency events such as storms or unexpected outages. By offering rapid-response power and improving the integration of intermittent generation like wind and solar, this project reduces reliance on imported fuels and supports state-of-the-art grid resiliency. Ultimately, Elliot BESS is an investment in local infrastructure, keeping energy dollars and jobs close to home while supporting a more robust, American energy system.

Protecting the Environment and the Community

The impact of Elliot BESS extends far beyond powering homes and businesses in Vanderburgh County. Through major investments in local labor, property taxes, and reliable power generation, this project helps fuel long-term economic prosperity for Indiana. Tax revenues generated by the project can be reinvested directly into public services, from school districts to emergency services, ensuring that the benefits of clean energy growth are felt by all members of the community.

RWE’s decision to bring advanced energy storage solutions to Indiana underscores the company’s commitment to American manufacturing jobs, innovation, and energy independence.

As growing sectors such as data centers, manufacturing, and technology drive ever-higher demand for reliable power, projects like Elliot BESS become essential signatures of U.S. competitiveness on the world stage.

The facility’s late-life plan for decommissioning and restoring land to agricultural use exemplifies RWE’s focus on responsible, locally grounded growth. By integrating the latest in battery technology with community investment and best-in-class stewardship, Elliot BESS is not just building reliable power—it’s building a foundation for Indiana’s and America’s energy future.

The Elliot BESS project is rooted in strong local partnerships—sited exclusively on participating landowners’ private property and structured to deliver over 20 years of consistent income to local farmers and property owners. Construction and ongoing operations will draw on Indiana’s skilled workforce, supporting up to 300 construction jobs and onboarding local talent for its permanent on-site team. In addition, property tax contributions are designed to support schools, infrastructure upgrades, and public services—ensuring the entire region benefits from Elliot BESS’s presence now and for decades to come.
