Willowbrook Solar

Project introduction

The Willowbrook Solar Project is a flagship 150-megawatt (MW) clean energy addition in Brown and Highland Counties, Ohio. Led by RWE, one of America’s largest clean energy producers, this solar farm is designed to generate reliable power for more than 24,145 homes annually. Beyond providing a substantial American energy supply, Willowbrook embodies a forward-thinking approach to adding new capacity, bolstering U.S. energy independence, and growing domestic industry.

Currently in its operational phase as of February 2024, Willowbrook Solar stands as a testament to RWE’s commitment to expanding America’s energy infrastructure. The project’s journey began in 2021 with permitting and construction milestones, culminating in a facility built to serve both the local communities and the broader energy demands of a rapidly growing nation.

Building a Resilient Ohio Grid

Willowbrook Solar significantly enhances the resiliency and reliability of the Ohio electric grid. By adding 150 MW of generation capacity, the project makes the grid less susceptible to energy price volatility and power disruptions that often affect consumers relying on traditional energy sources. Solar power operates during peak demand periods, reducing the need for expensive, imported energy and helping to stabilize prices for families and businesses alike. As the U.S. faces growing demand from expanding manufacturing and electrification, projects like Willowbrook are uniquely positioned to provide rapid, scalable energy additions—keeping Ohio at the forefront of domestic energy reliability and American energy independence

Creating Lasting Value for Ohio and America

The Willowbrook Solar Project is more than a source of clean energy—it’s a statement about the future of American manufacturing, rural communities, and energy independence. As energy demand rises, driven by new data centers, advanced manufacturing, and electrification, projects like Willowbrook enable the U.S. to meet these needs with innovative, domestic solutions.

By investing tens of millions of dollars in infrastructure, jobs, and tax revenue, Willowbrook is a catalyst for revitalizing local economies. Property tax revenue flows directly to schools, roads, and critical services, while the presence of full-time operational roles ensures continued economic activity in Brown and Highland Counties. With an intentional focus on protecting and enhancing farmland—by planting pollinator-friendly vegetation—the project demonstrates how energy development and agriculture can thrive side by side.

Willowbrook’s impact doesn’t end with energy production: it’s a hub for local partnerships, charitable giving, and educational opportunities. RWE is deeply committed to supporting the next generation of U.S. energy professionals and the communities that host our projects. By building Willowbrook in America, for America, RWE is advancing the goal of a resilient, reliable, and economically vibrant energy future

Supporting Local Communities—from Schools to Biodiversity

Willowbrook Solar’s commitment extends far beyond electricity. The project brings tangible benefits to local communities, with more than $45.5 million in property tax revenue over its lifetime—supporting critical public services like K-12 education. Partnerships with local organizations foster job training and employment, while investments in charitable initiatives strengthen the region’s social fabric.

Additionally, the project serves as a model for environmental stewardship, dedicating land to pollinator plants that boost biodiversity and provide natural buffers for neighbors. These efforts underscore RWE’s philosophy: clean energy can support prosperity, community vibrancy, and long-term ecological health simultaneously
