Mesquite Solar Complex

Project introduction

Maricopa County, Arizona

Nestled outside sunny Phoenix, Arizona, the Mesquite Solar Complex houses five solar farms alongside co-located battery projects. With a capacity of nearly 600 MW and Arizona’s sun exceeding 350 days annually, Mesquite Solar serves the growing demand for renewable electricity.

In 2024, a 10 MW (40 MWh) battery storage system, as well as a 52.5 MW solar project were added to Mesquite Solar. It’s now made up of five solar farms with a capacity of 530.5 MW and 70 MW (280 MWh) battery storage.

Supporting Landowners

Landowners who choose to harvest solar power are following a long tradition of using their land responsibly to produce food, fiber, and fuel. Mesquite Solar is located on private property, offering participating landowners a reliable source of farm income over the 35- to 40-year life of the project. Landowners who choose to host the clean energy facility have the opportunity to reinvest in their farming operations, save for retirement, and use their increased purchasing power to support local businesses throughout the community. Moreover, soil on the land can rest and rehabilitate during this period, making it more productive for future agriculture.

Supporting Maricopa County

Mesquite Solar will provide millions of dollars in new tax revenue to Maricopa County through its lifetime, that can reduce the tax burden on residents and/or be used to increase county budget to support essential services, including schools, roads, fire departments, and first responders.

RWE Clean Energy is active in the community by engaging with local organizations and nonprofits and by giving back through a range of community events and opportunities.

RWE commits to support initiatives in favor of education and wildlife in the region. It runs the Mesquite Wildlife Oasis, an educational program connecting students with the environment via science-based workshops. The oasis serves as a living classroom, fostering a deeper understanding of the natural word while being the home to a diverse range of wildlife.

Currently, RWE and the Arizona Game and Fish Department are considering adding a burrowing owl relocation area with new nest boxes. As well as contributing to directly preserve a unique bird species, students will learn about the owls’ habitat requirements, nesting behavior, and ecological significance.

Why solar matters

Solar energy has become one of the most affordable and reliable sources of electricity available today. While increasing our energy reliability and independence, it can drive economic growth in local communities though job creation and tax revenue, and contributes to environmental sustainability as we transition to our clean energy future.
